Economic disparities are built in within the various socio-economic systems which have evolved since the dawn of human civilisation. Inequality in the distribution of resources and affluence and poverty seem to be inherent to human civilisation. They cannot be eliminated. Socialism and Communism have signally failed to achieve this objective. This can best be accomplished through a judicious application of the principle of Zakaat which is unique to Islam. It is this Islamic principle of social Justice which is highlighted in this book.

This monograph entitled Zakaat : Islamic System of Social Justice, highlights the system Islam has evolved to accomplish redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor. Zakaat is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. It enjoins moral responsibility and obligatory religious duty for all Muslims whose income exceeds the prescribed limit of exemption to pay Zakaat so that the needy, the poor and the people in distress can be helped. Zakaat is thus both a social and religious obligation on the “haves” to help the “have-nots.” Those Muslims who fail to fulfill this important religious obligation will be guilty of heinous sin and will be subjected to serious punishment by Allah (SWT).

This Monograph spells out clearly the categories on whom Zakaat will be binding as well as those entitled to receive Zakaat funds. It elaborates clearly the purpose for which Zakaat funds can be utilized as per the Qur'anic injunctions and the Traditions of the Prophet (SAWS). It also explains lucidly the principles of assessment as agreed upon by different schools of Fiqh. In the end it provides a handy proforma to assess correctly the Zakaat dues.
